MAJOR  SERVICE  COMMITTEES

COMMITTEE: Learn-to-Swim Program CONTACT: Cindy VanDyk

Activity: Provides two weeks of Red Cross approved swimming lessons to youth. Lessons are targeted for different skill levels. Older youth assist as aides & trainers. One of Club’s oldest service activities.

COMMITTEE: Blood Drive CONTACT: John Purcell 678-4935

Activity: Quarterly Red Cross blood drive sponsored by Club

COMMITTEE: Scholarships CONTACT: Ed Walker TEL: 678-6782

Activity: Committee selects Coupeville students to receive wide range of scholarships based on academic achievement, community service, need and/or field of study, with typical support of $12,000 - $14,000 annually.

COMMITTEE: Meals on Wheels CONTACT: Von Summers TEL: 678-2289

Activity: Volunteers deliver meals weekly to people with special needs in the central Whidbey area.

COMMITTEE: Camp Horizon CONTACT: Dave Fish TEL: 678-7181

Activity: Camp Horizon is a facility operated by our Multiple District that provides camping opportunities for people with disabilities. Club provides financial support and volunteers do maintenance work and provide help during camping weeks.

Activity: A wide range of medical equipment (e.g. crutches, wheel chairs, hospital beds) is available for loan to people in the community. No fee is charged, although some users choose to show their appreciation with a donation.

Activity: Semi-annual, the Club picks up trash along two miles of Highway 20.

Activity: Semi-annually trash is picked up along local central Whidbey roads.

COMMITTEE: Health Screening Unit CONTACT: Al Sherman TEL: 678-4391

Activity: Our Multiple District owns and operates a health screening unit which comes to Coupeville schools annually. Lions help evaluate the sight and hearing of students.

COMMITTEE: Eyeglass Collection CONTACT: Rod Barnes TEL: 678-6971

Activity: Lions’ eyeglass collection boxes are placed throughout the community. Eyeglasses which are collected are sent to a Lion’s facility for repair & classification and are then used to support vision programs for needy people. This is also done with hearing aids.

Activity: Lions cut & split wood to give to needy community members for winter heating.

Activity: Our Club sponsors Troop 58 and encourages Lions to be involved in Troop activities. The Scouts assist our Club during our Garage Sale.

Activity: In collaboration with the Coupeville School District, female and male students of the quarter are selected quarterly and honored by the Club. At the end of the year, two students of the year are selected and given awards.

MAJOR  FUNDRAISING  COMMITTEES

COMMITTEE:  Annual Garage Sale CONTACT:Garage Sale - Ricardo Reyes

Activity: Collect donations throughout year from community members for annual garage sale. Items are sorted & stored throughout the year in barn. Club-wide effort to move merchandise to elementary school and conduct 2-day sale in Jun/Jul. This is Club’s largest annual fund raiser and supports our general fund.

COMMITTEE: Annual Scholarship Auction CONTACT: Ron Wilkinson

Activity: Items suitable for live & silent auction are solicited from Club members and the community and are sold at a soup & salad dinner. Proceeds are dedicated to the Scholarship Fund.

COMMITTEE: White Cane CONTACT: Joe Walck

Activity: Annual fund raising campaign to support the Lions Northwest Sight and Hearing Foundation and local community sight & hearing needs. Funds solicited through letters and at local businesses & public events. All proceeds of the drive support sight & hearing programs.

COMMITTEE: Newspaper Collection CONTACT: Al Sherman TEL: 678-4391

Activity: A community collection bin for newspapers is located behind the Post Office. The papers are taken by Club members to the transfer station and the Club is paid for the value of the papers.  Proceeds go to the general fund.

COMMITTEE: Annual Shopping Spree CONTACT: Penny Barville TEL: 678-4798

Activity: In October & November, raffle tickets are sold for a 3-minute shopping at the Prairie Center Market. Proceeds go to the general fund.

COMMITTEE: Annual Salmon BBQ CONTACT: Bob Johnson TEL: 678-6480

Activity: Annual community salmon BBQ picnic at Town Park in conjunction with the final summer Concert on the Cove. Proceeds go to the general fund.

COMMITTEE: Keystone Park Maintenance CONTACT: Dave Fish

Activity: State ferry systems pays Club for maintaining grounds at Keystone ferry landing. Funds received benefit our administrative fund.
